European NATO allies fear Trump punishment over foreign policy questionnaire

European NATO allies fear Trump punishment over foreign policy questionnaire
The European allies of the US in NATO have already begun answering a questionnaire with which Washington asked them to state to what extent they support the foreign policy of American President Donald Trump.

The European allies of the US in NATO have already begun answering a questionnaire with which Washington asked them to state to what extent they support the foreign policy of American President Donald Trump.
However, many fear that their answers may later be used for their «punishment», according to a report by the Financial Times.
Bloomberg reported in mid-August that the American administration, within the framework of reviewing the US military presence in Europe, sent a questionnaire to NATO allies in which, among other things, it asked them to clarify whether they publicly support Trump's foreign policy and whether they procure weapons systems from American companies.
«Certain US allies in NATO in Europe are concerned that the answers to the questionnaire (a large part of which concerns information that is already publicly available and known in Washington) may be used for the imposition of sanctions or other «punitive» measures in the context of the ongoing review of the American military presence in Europe, which is expected to be completed by the end of the year», the newspaper reports.
Earlier, Bloomberg pointed out that certain allies reportedly intend to provide more general answers so as to avoid detailed positioning on the most difficult questions.
These include whether they are willing to publicly support the actions of American foreign policy or to condemn the European «Made in Europe» policy in the defense industry sector.
The Pentagon is conducting a six-month review of the American military presence in Europe, which is expected to be completed by December.
According to Bloomberg, European allies fear that the outcome may be a significant reduction in the number of American troops and military equipment located on the European continent.
